My Services
How your individual breastfeeding journey unfolds is specific to you.
Below you will find general summaries of what can be included in your session based on your baby’s age and your reason for seeking support. If your needs do not fit nicely into the descriptions below, let me know and I will tailor your session specifically to you and your baby.
Prenatal preparations
Pregnancy is a good time to think about how you'd like to feed your baby. Understanding how the circumstances of your baby's birth impact your baby's ability to breastfeed or bottle feed, may set you and your baby up for success after the birth. This consultation may last as long as 2 hours and may be shared with anybody you would like to include in preparations for feeding your baby.
Expect to feel prepared with reasonable expectations of you and your baby immediately after birth.
I will:
• Collect a prenatal health history and offer education about how to prepare for success
• Discuss what to expect in the first few hours and days of your baby's life
• Make suggestions for things you can do now to support breastfeeding success
• Identify some common pitfalls so that you may understand or avoid them
• Perform breast pump flange fitting if desired
Getting to know your baby
The first few days of your baby's life are dedicated to welcoming your new family member and getting to know each other. While individual characteristics are present right from the start, it's helpful to understand the human drive for survival and how it influences a baby's behavior while breastmilk is concentrated in small drops of liquid gold.
Expect to gain confidence in understanding your baby's communication.
I will:
• Guide you to position your baby comfortably at the breast
• Offer pain relieving suggestions
• Explain your baby's feeding cues
• Describe a good feeding in the early hours and days of breastfeeding
• Guide you to assess swallows and maximize your baby's time and effort at the breast for decreased weight loss and increased satiety
When your milk comes in
Copious milk production takes a few days to make itself well known. Understanding the relationship between breast fullness and comfort helps you to establish the milk supply your baby will thrive on. Some babies struggle with fast flowing milk, they may feel uncomfortable from too much milk.
Expect to learn about engorgement and finding ways to increase your comfort and your baby's comfort.
I will:
• Guide you to find a rhythm in the day and night to support your own breast comfort and your baby's growth needs
• Offer suggestions for maximizing your sleep and baby's weight gain
• Help you understand your milk supply, either over or under supply
• Discuss how to avoid nipple trauma, plugged ducts, and mastitis
Ongoing breastfeeding support
A well established milk supply is maintained by continued regular removal of milk from the breast. Supply and demand is the unique relationship between the milk you produce to meet your baby's physical and emotional needs and your baby's awareness of exactly how much milk is needed. As you and your baby navigate your breastfeeding relationship there are some problems or concerns that might occur.
Expect to be able to recognise problems if they happen and have support to resolve them if they do.
• Fussy baby
• Weight concerns, pre and post weights if desired
• Sleeplessness, you and your baby
• When, how, and why to use a breast pump
• Preparing to return to work
• When to call your doctor: mood instability, anxiety, depression, mastitis
When it's time to stop
Weaning can be led by you or your baby depending on life circumstances, your goals, individual needs, or any factor that you feel impacts the breastfeeding relationship. When to wean is a unique, individual decision between you and your baby.
Expect to feel supported that your decision is the best decision for you and your baby.
Some possible considerations:
• Storing breastmilk for use at a later time
• Recognising your baby's readiness for other foods
• Teething strategies while breastfeeding
• Reducing your milk volume abruptly or over time
• Breastmilk donation, milk banking
The Thompson Method
Beautiful Breastfeeding Program
A four hour presentation created by Dr. Robyn Thompson where you will learn evidence-based strategies to establish breastfeeding, prevent common challenges, and understand your baby's cues. This presentation can be divided into two sessions or delivered in one longer session, in your home or remotely. Regarding Insurance:
Under the Affordable Care Act: Most insurance plans must cover breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment. This typically includes access to a lactation consultant (IBCLC). It may be covered without cost-sharing (no copay/deductible).
Many services may be eligible for insurance reimbursement. Check your coverage to understand your benefits and options before scheduling.
Milk Made Colorado works with families to help make lactation consultation more accessible. I will provide a super bill so that you may seek insurance reimbursement for payments made.
If you are covered by Medicaid please inquire about how my services may be free of charge to you.
"Just wanted to thank you for your help and encouragement and let you know our success story. We have been exclusively breastfeeding since we saw you, and we've gotten really good at it! We can even feed walking around the zoo and at truck tailgates. Thank you so much for your help."
